My wife insisted we watch this film - since it was not something in which I was interested (dramas and romances are not usually what I prefer to watch)I picked up a book and began reading. Within minutes, I was completely enraptured by this movie and forgot about the book. While a picture with the title TEA WITH MUSSOLINI sounds leisurely, trust me, it’s not. It moves forward beautifully telling a true story of English and American women in Italy at the breakout of the war and its effect on them and the Italian child they have all raised together. This is a remarkable film (an epic in small movie disguise)with indelible performances from a perfect cast esp. Cher and Joan Plowright. Why neither they nor this film have appeared on many (if any) best of the year lists is completely mind-boggling to my wife and myself. The play is truly the thing here and director Zeffirelli has done a marvelous job telling a wonderful story (his own life)that’s ultimately irristible. Filled with humor, hope and inspiration - words that usually make producers cringe these days but words that still mean the best in great moviemaking. My choice for best film of the year and one of the best of all time. A minor masterpiece. Please give it a try…I don’t think you’ll be disappointed if you’re looking for something with great heart that has something to say about the dignity of the human spirit. Better than LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL. A gem!

The film “Tea with Mussolini” deals with complex issues in such a subtle way that it is easy to dismiss if the viewer overlooks the intriquite relationships of the characters. How the characters evolve from being self-involved (their love of the arts and formalities) to becoming caring individuals and creating bonds that overcome the heirarchies of the social class structure due to race, nationality, war and a young boy that pulls them together. Luca a young Italian boy copes with having no family due to being an illigitamate child in picturesque Italy during The Second World War. Lucas mothers death and his father’s refusal to take him into his care due to a wife that would not accept him lead him to find a new family with his father’s secretary (Joan Plowright) and her sociatal peers The Scorpioni (The Scorpions) named for the groups sharp wit and poisonous bite. This group takes young Luca into their privliged clique and shares in the education and introduces young Luca to The Arts which is the groups passion. Little do they know that by doing this they have began on a road to self change that will alter thier view on the world, thier friendships and detestations of others in the group. This film is a story of compassion, friendship, art, family, accepatance, change, egos, jeolousy and shows the letting go of beliefs and the opening of hearts. The cast is first rate with the likes of Cher, Maggie Smith, Joan Plowright, Lily Tomlin and Judi Dench along with the perfect casting of the character Luca played by Baird Wallace (Luca: teenager) and Charlie Lucas (Luca: child) both of these fine young actors will grab the viewers heart and make him want to help with the caring of and the education of this heart grabbing character. Luca’s troubles will affect the viewer and pull at one’s heartstrings. Baird Wallace is talented young actor that holds his own and deserves praise and notice from the industry. Recomendations: Buy this film, it is a film with grit and emotions that will make you examine your own life and wish that you could have been as bleesed as Luca had.

The Fatal Fury franchise is full of promises and this first animated feature takes the characters beyond the video game boundaries. It’s cool how the fighters (Terry Bogard especially) are written as being normal and sensitive rather than always butch, evil and trying to start a fight. The characters in the Street Fighter series were too much like this but Terry Bogard always appears innocent and his adult form still looks like the child he was at the beginning.

But my fave character in Fatal Fury was always Geese Howard. He is such a cool bad guy and live action bad guys should be more like him. Andy Bogard and Joe Higashi are amusing supporting characters and make great sidekicks for Terry.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Fatal Fury OVA - Double Impact! Click Here

The ending is a little too quick but when you consider that there is a follow up and a great animated movie it ain’t so bad. If you like this one then the others should give you a good fix.

FATAL FURY 2

Not a revolutionary animated movie by any means but this sequel to Fatal Fury has a reasonably good story and interesting characters. The color scheme is bright and easy on the eye and the animation style is better than most Japanese anime in which everyone looks like Asian/American to appeal to both audiences.

I thought that Krauser was a cool bad guy and, for once, one that I doubted the hero (Terry Bogard) couldn’t defeat so easily. His costume was a bit excessive and it is hard to believe that he could be so agile under such a suit but one can overlook such a flaw easily.

Terry’s brother Andy returns and so does Joe Higashi but it’s the 2 new characters that are the best thing about this movie. Kim is a teenage boy who idolizes Terry and considers him to be a real role model. But he is gutted when he discovers that Terry is just a burnt out drunk and will do anything for him until he gets back on his feet. The other new character is Mai and she is a very “bouncy” character if you know what I mean.

The fight scenes are very well thought out and vivid. Every punch and kick looks painful and the other heavies look pretty mean too. But we all know that in the end Terry is gonna beat the crap out of them. Just like the video game says…Terry Bogard is the King of Fighters.

But at 68 minutes you feel a little cheated. But with such a short running time there is no room for fat.

The DVD is in 1.33:1 with a nice picture transfer with brilliant colors and the Dolby Stereo soundtracks are adequate but not impressive. Many trailers are available and there are some cool motion menus.

Two of the best action specials on one DVD- how about that? Of course there’s the dual language option, and also a character sketch portfolio. One thing about the subtitles is that they’re not very accurate. If you know any Japanese at all, you’ll notice that the subtitles are kinda different from what is being said. But, that’s a small qualm since the original story is intact, so if you enjoyed the VHS tapes, definitely grab a copy of the DVD.

This film just misses hitting the mark in so many ways. There are the whipping scenes which are good…but the sex scenes are weak. Especially when the monks begin to rape the victim, they wear cloaks over themselves so you see absolutely nothing. The women are hot, especially the star of the film, Alice Arno. The background classical music is especially grand and makes the whole film appear to be more elegant than one would expect from this subject matter.

The dialog is tame compared to what they “should have been saying” while they were abusing these women. I would have liked to see more realistic pain and suffering…especially when you consider this is a Marquis DeSade film!

All in all, it was quite entertaining for Capt. Freaky. And I do recommend watching it if you get an opportunity. There are moments when your girlfriend may ‘dampen her shorts’….and if so, ‘go for it’ with her while you can! There are no guarantee’s that what you are looking at will get any better in future sequences, when you are watching this French farce.

I picked this up because I really enjoyed this story by the Marquis de Sade. Given how brutal the story is, I was very surprised that someone actually went out and made a movie. I confess that curiosity really got the best of me and I had to see how faithful they were to the story. I am pleased to announce that on that level the movie is pretty accurate, though I think some people will be disappointed in a good portion of how this is presented. Let me explain…

Buy,Download, Or Stream Justine De Sade! Click Here

Okay, a lot of people associate Sade with sadism and other deviant sexual perversions. I think a lot of people read Sade and focus on these particular points, so naturally I think many were expecting an overly explicit movie depicting horrors in a very hardcore fashion. The whipping scenes are in there, just not as drawn out as in the book. However, if you read Sade you get a clear picture that it’s not all about the perverse, it’s about philosophy. A repellent philosophy that is supposed to go against the norm, to prove that concepts such as the relativity of evil can be conjured up by someone. While his tales may appeal to our violent or possessive/dominant side, I think the main point was to detail what is the major difference between concepts of vice and virtue. I think Justine illustrates this question very well.

There is a vast amount of nudity in this film, specifically when it comes to the women. Actually, most of the men keep their clothes on and basically keep their robes on. For the scenes that require it, they simply lift their robes in such a fashion that keeps things hidden and use the girls’ body to hide anything. I know some people are disappointed now. I thought Arno did a pretty good job in this, but she was a little overly complacent in my opinion. I realize that Sade’s portrayal of Justine was pretty submissive, but I just think they should’ve played up the terror factor a little bit more. Arno’s performance was a little “too” okay with being tortured and raped by various people. Granted all of these scenes are blatantly faked and we can see that easy enough, call it a low budget problem. I personally didn’t mind because I’m more interested in it as an art form, which I’m sure Sade the play writer intended. Although, Sade the practitioner may disagree, then again he’d probably support my ideology that we all have our different way of looking at things.

I was surprised at what was cut out of the movie. Most of the cut scenes actually involve the philosophical debates between Justine and her captors. I guess people view ideas as being more dangerous and explicit as some of the torturous scenes. Despite the cut scenes they certainly couldn’t include the entire book, for the movie would be insanely long, so naturally the long winded philosophical passages that came from the libertine’s justifications are very abridged. I was still impressed that they included this in the film, for I didn’t find that boring at all. I liked hearing the justification for the vices. I have my own and I rationalize them to fit my worldview, very similar to how Sade’s characters justify theirs.

I realize I didn’t really go into what the movie was about, but it’s basically about a girl who suffers progressively worse and worse misfortunes at the hands of more vile torturers. Justine is an orphan girl whose virtue and religion are her most important things. She is kidnapped and put in jail, raped and tortured as if a mockery to the virtuous life that has no escape from vice. Just when she escapes from one horror she is immediately thrust into another. It has the unhappy ending found in the novel, so I am glad they were faithful to Sade until the end.

Overall, I liked this movie. Despite its 1970’s B-movie quality, I did enjoy their rendition. It didn’t really have as much punch as Sade’s original story, but I think that’s because I was able to intellectualize with the novel a lot more. I also think that if you enjoyed Sade’s works beyond the perverse writing, you will find merit in this movie regardless of the fact that it doesn’t show anything in the hardcore spectrum. But of course it does appeal to those who enjoy a great deal of female nudity. Naturally Arno has splendid assets for this role, which is quite nice for Sade had a penchant for portraying quite vile looking characters.

“Boys Town”, is I believe one of those very special movies that only comes along occasionally in a viewing lifetime. I never fail to be moved and inspired by this wonderful story and by the very special man who is central to this story; Father Edward J. Flanagan, the man who founded Nebraska’s famed Boys Town which has given hope and a decent future to countless homeless and abused young boys and girls ever since. MGM here created a perfect story out of this unique man’s life and they ended up with a stunning motion picture that has remained a much loved classic ever since. Spencer Tracy will always be remembered for his Academy Award winning portrayal of Father Flanagan and it is he who gives “Boys Town”, its lasting appeal with a performance full of honesty, and a belief in the basic decency of all people regardless of religion, age or colour. The films most famous line that “there is no such thing as a bad boy”, echoes Father Flanagan’s philosophy throughout his life and it creates a lasting impression that has succeeded in touching each new generation of movie goers who have loved this film.

“Boys Town”, was planned as one of MGM Studios biggest productions for 1938 and having Spencer Tracy play the famous priest was an inspired piece of casting if ever there was. Tracy actually built up a reputation for his roles as a priest from his earlier work in “San Francisco”. It indeed would be hard to find a better marriage of actor and role than we have here with Spencer Tracy and Father Flanagan. Playing the Priest as a caring, warm and endlessly optimistic man Spencer Tracy also injects the character with enough toughness and inner drive to make him a believable person who at times questions his own judgement and inner faith. It really is a masterful performance and stands as one of the pinnacles in Spencer Tracy’s legendary career as an actor. Of course as in a major production such as this there is plenty of talent on show in the other major roles. Mickey Rooney really came into his own playing the streetwise tough boy Whitey Marsh who along the way, despite many ups and downs is given a new life full of hope by Father Flanagan. Rooney’s often overlooked talent is truly utilised to the fullest here and his transformation to where he becomes Boys Town’s Mayor through Father Flanagan’s endless concern and care for him despite the troubles he causes is one of Rooney’s best performances ever. Henry Hull playing Dave Morris the eternally frustrated offsider to Father Flanagan really does great work here and adds some much appreciated humour in the scenes when he hears about the “latest scheme” being hatched by Father Flanagan that of course he will be dragged into. The scene when he unexpectedly delivers Christmas presents to the boys who are going without even the basics for the festive season is a beautifully realised moment that is one of the most moving in this story. The young actors who make up the boys in the story are also outstanding and high marks in particular go to Gene Reynolds as the crippled boy Tony Ponessa who shares some of the most moving moments in “Boys Town”, with Father Flanagan, Frankie Thomas as Boys Town Mayor Freddie Fuller, and perhaps most interesting of all Sidney Miller in a wonderfully played out performance that contains some great humour as jewish boy Mo Kahn. Child actor Bobs Watson of course steals many scenes as Boys Town’s youngest resident Pee Wee who is largely responsible through almost tragic circumstances, for Whitey’s transformation into a decent individual. Often accused of being overly sentimental “Boys Town”, probably is guilty of that at times but I certainly dont see anything wrong with that. Certainly many problems are sorted out perhaps a bit too easily in the script and most of the boys seem to be perhaps at times a bit too nice but they are really not things to take exception to and the fine writing and character development on display make “Boys Town”, first class viewing.

Followed a couple of years later with a sequel titled “Men of Boys Town”, and featuring Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney in their old roles, this 1938 film is still the one to see. In our present hardened society it is easy to pass harsh judgement on a film like “boys Town”, however I find that I love this film more and more with each screening and I believe the sentiment works very well in telling this story. The care put into this film by cast and director Norman Taurog is evident in every frame and makes it a heart felt piece of movie story telling. There seem to be no performers like Spencer Tracy nowadays who could bring such feeling to the role of Father Flanagan in my belief. Sentiment, drama, action, and strong characters with a clear intent all combine to help make a viewing of MGM’s “Boys Town”, a treasured experience you should not miss. Enjoy this classic sometime soon.

Keeping this review “short”, I am compelled to echo the kind words of previous reviewers. There’s much to be said of Boys Town, but it would fill a 1500 page book and still be too short. Father Flanagan died in Germany May 15, 1948. The tears still well up today, more than a half century later. Watching these 1938 and 1941 films is like reliving my childhood all over again. I recall so well the scenes in the movie…. but “I” remember the rooms, the buildings, the birch trees lining the entryway to Boys Town and the wooden stage where Whitey Marsh (Mickey Rooney) was elected Mayor of Boys Town. Father Flanagan’s office (and the rest of the building) where PeeWee got his candy treats became the gradeschool principal’s office. I remember it all so well. I relive my childhood with every viewing. Oh yes…. in real life I was there: 1948 - 1953. These two movies are part of me today to share my history with my children and their children.

How could I possibly “not” like these great works?

William H. Macy, Morgan Freeman and Christopher Walken are honest security guards in an art museum, but when they learn that their three favorite artworks are being transferred to a museum in Denmark, they concoct a plan to switch the real masterpieces with fakes.

It’s the blind leading the blind as these incompetent thieves put their plan into motion and, according to “Murphy’s Law,” anything that can go wrong, does in this laugh-out-loud comedy.

Marcia Gay Harden co-stars as Walken’s wife, who has a “surprise” coming her way before the movie’s finish.

It went straight to video, apparently because of trouble with the company that owned the distribution rights, but if “Wild Hogs” made money, this shouldn’t have had any trouble.

The plot involves two museum security guards who’ve fallen in love with two paintings, and a third guard who has . . . some other relationship with a statue, destined to be sold to another museum and replaced by suitable horrific modern art repellent to the guys, namely Christopher Walken, Morgan Freeman and William Macy. By the title you can tell what their solution is, so I need say no more about that.

The tone is light, comedic, but there are no real out-loud laughs, despite best efforts. Obviously the acting is very good, the chemistry works, but there are very large holes in reason and common sense. That shouldn’t bother you if you don’t expect too much out of the movie, but it’s might be rather annoying at times to some. Still, overall it worked reasonably well, too bad it didn’t get a chance at the mall.

Infinity Entertainment is re-releasing “The Judy Garland Show” (1963-1964) on DVD. The series was previously available on Pioneer, but those editions have since gone out of print. Infinity promises to release all 26 episodes in a 12 Volume Set– 2 episodes on each DVD.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Judy Garland Show, Vol. 1! Click Here

The first episode of Volume One illustrates what was wrong with the show. All three major TV networks at the time (CBS, NBC, and ABC) had a bidding war to sign the amazing and incomparable Judy Garland to a weekly TV series. CBS, having won, couldn’t decide which “format” to put Judy in (note: nobody “formats” Judy Garland!) and seemed determined to change her from a dynamic diva into an average TV personality. Whatever changes CBS threw at her (and their were innumerable changes throughout the 26 episodes), Judy gamely rolled with the punches and gave her very best.

The first episode starts promisingly; with Judy singing “The Sweetest Sounds” with Count Basie and his orchestra. Later, she also sings “Memories Of You.” There should have been more musical magic with Judy and Count Basie. Instead, too much time is wasted on asinine “comedy routines” with series regular Jerry Van Dyke. Please, Jerry Van Dyke never belonged on the same stage as Judy Garland! Mel Torme sings a manic version of “Fascinating Rhythm” while simultaneously playing drums. Obscure folk singer Judy Henske (who?) delivers a strong rendition of Billie Holiday’s classic “God Bless The Child,” and then joins Jerry and Mel for a pointless parody of Peter, Paul, and Mary called “Peter, Paul, And Irving.” Judy Garland, finally and at last, returns to close the episode with the heartbreakingly sad “A Cottage For Sale” and the rousing “Hey, Look Me Over” from the forgotten Lucille Ball musical “Wildcat.” Distressingly, the viewer will notice there is not enough of Judy Garland on this episode of “The Judy Garland Show.”

The second episode, though featuring more pointless “comedy routines” from Jerry Van Dyke and Soupy Sales, is of far better quality and much more entertaining. This is because Judy’s special guest is her own daughter Liza Minnelli. It is a treat to see young Liza at 17, nearly a decade away from her own career breakthrough in the film version of “Cabaret” and her TV concert “Liza With A Z.” The strong mother-daughter bond is evident everywhere here. The affection between Judy and Liza is genuine and affecting. The Judy/Liza duets here are magical. Liza also does her own solo song and dance routine, and The Brothers Castro from Mexico offer a sexy, Latin twist on “You Make Me Feel So Young.” Most importantly, Judy Garland: The Dynamic Diva is seen full force here as she delivers explosive performances of “Come Rain Or Come Shine” and “As Long As He Needs Me.”

I’m removing one star from my review because I find Jerry Van Dyke so annoying and unnecessary. Judy Garland, the greatest entertainer of the 20th Century, definitely deserves five stars! These episodes were both taped in July of 1963, when Judy was age 41. She would leave us much too soon; just six years later at age 47. But Judy looks fabulous here and is in excellent voice. Judy’s timeless talent will live forever!

This series of DVDs seemed to have great promise when announced … a re-release of out-of-print material previously released by Pioneer and Geneon, with the mention of improved sound quality. This series may have slightly better sound but is painfully lacking due to having been ruthlessly edited. Why they would do this seems incredible … whole chunks of the shows are missing and the promised extra material is minimal. Searching out used copies of the previous releases would be much more satisfying, if you want my advice. I bought Volume 1 but was unhappy with it. Volume 2 just arrived today and is equally poorly done. I am returning it for refund. Such a huge disappointment.

This is one of the finest low budget crime films of the fifties, one that manages to get an extraordinary number of things right. After a dozen years of film noir and tough detective films, one would have imagined that most of the angles would have been tried and worked to exhaustion, but PICKUP ON NOON STREET managed to be amazingly fresh and original. It is also a multi-layered film. On one level, it is an espionage film, with federal authorities, with the help of local police in New York, on the trail of a group selling secrets to the Communists. Interestingly, the collaborators are not treated as political individuals, but utterly unprincipled capitalists. As Joey, Richard Kiley’s character, puts it early in the film to his former girlfriend Candy, “How many times do I have to tell you we’re not criminals. This is big business.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Pickup on South Street - Criterion Collection! Click Here

The film features a first rate cast. Except possibly for his screen debut in KISS OF DEATH, Richard Widmark was never better than he was in this film as three-time loser pickpocket Skip McCoy. The ultimate anti-hero, McCoy’s motives are complex and opaque, even at the end. Jean Peters, later Mrs. Howard Hughes (to whom she was married from 1957 to 1971), is fetching as Candy, a shady dame with a past but with the proverbial heart of gold. Richard Kiley is suitably slimy as Joey, the seller of secrets to the Communists. Kiley would later (after his voice darkened) become the narrator for dozens upon dozens of National Geographic specials (such a familiar voice that they joke in JURAISSAC PARK about getting him to do the voice over for their guided tour). Thelma Ritter, as she did so often in the forties and fifties, steals every scene she is in as the necktie-selling, police informing Moe Williams, who is saving up for her gravestone and burial plot (”If they buried me in potter’s field, it would just kill me”).

The psychology of the characters comes straight from Mickey Spillane. A notable instance is the way Candy falls for Skip McCoy. This aspect of the film isn’t merely improbable: it is impossible. Skip picks her pocket. He causes her to go on a long search for him while paying off stoolies along the way. He slugs her upon their next meeting when he finds her going through his things, robs her purse while she is unconscious, and then pours beer on her face to wake her up. After kissing her, he unceremoniously tosses her out on the street. When she returns, he kisses her some more, before pushing her down, taking all the money out of her purse, and then shaking her down for more money. And, of course, by this time she is hopelessly in love with him. In what universe is this possible? None, but for the sake of the drama we accept it effortlessly.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Pickup on South Street - Criterion Collection! Click Here

The film is stuffed with marvelous details, whether dialogue, music, or sets. No one seeing the film could ever forget Skip’s bizarre waterfront lodgings, in which he cools his beer (and stores his booty) by lowering a wooden box into the East River with a rope. Among dozens of great touches, one of my favorites is when a stoolie, eating Chinese food, takes his tip money and puts it in his pocket using chopsticks. The score, by the relatively unknown Leigh Harline, nonetheless manages to be almost as edgy as Edward Hermann.

Interestingly, for all the film’s cynicism and edginess, it actually ends up with a more conventional happy ending than most of the hardboiled crime films of the forties and fifties. The guy and the gal end up together, and perhaps even happy. Moe tells Skip, “Stop using your hands, Skip, and start using your head.” He does, and all ends well. By the end, the bad guys are all either dead or in jail. What is fascinating about all this is that it was a direct violation of the Code, which decreed that all characters who engage in crime must be shown as paying for those crimes by the end of the film (which is why all those Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney villains of the thirties always died by the end of the film). Skip McCoy is not only a creep, he is a thief, yet at the end he is not only punished: he is given a clean bill of health for cooperating in taking down Commies. As such, he is one of the most unique anti-heroes of the age.

This is an absolute must-see film though I would like to add that for a Criterion film, this has perhaps the smallest number of first-rate features that I can recall. The print itself is pristine and gorgeous, but you get no additional video features. All the features are either articles or printed interviews.

The face of film noir wouldn’t have been the same without the distinctive face of Richard Widmark who exploded into the genre with his memorably over-the-top performance as baddie Tommy Udo in 1947’s Kiss of Death. For my money, however, it’s the underrated Victor Mature who really carries that film, although Widmark gets all the flashy scenes (his pushing of a wheelchair-bound Mildred Dunnock down the stairs is widely considered one of the cruelest in film history).

In Jules Dassin’s Night and the City (1950) and Pickup on South Street, however, Widmark truly comes into his own with two of the finest film noir performances of all time. The stage trained actor had added some substance to the flash. You find yourself sympathizing with the callous Skip McCoy (Pickup on South Street) and nervous Harry Fabian (Night and the City) despite their bad qualities. There’s an underlying vulnerability behind all the tough talk and rough gestures (the fact that Widmark looked so undernourished in the ’50s may have also had something to do with it).

With the uncompromising Sam Fuller (Shock Corridor) at the helm and Thelma Ritter (All About Eve, Rear Window) in a scene-stealing supporting role, you can’t go wrong. An essential release for the film noir afficionado.

This is a re-issue of a previous release by the Criterion Collection but features a brand new transfer of the film, which looks fantastic. All of the previous extra material has been carried over.

There is an audio commentary by filmmaker Al Reinert and astronaut Eugene Cernan, the last man to set foot on the Moon. Reinert provides some insight into how the film came together. He went through thousands of hours of footage and managed to put together an 80-minute film. Cernan shares some of his experiences about what it was like to be an astronaut at that time.

New to this edition is “An Accidental Gift: The Making of For All Mankind,” a 30-minute retrospective documentary. Reinert always wanted to see this outer space/Moon footage on the big screen and this was the impetus for the film. He got his start as a journalist covering NASA in the early 1980s. Through his contacts he got access to their film archives and found footage that had never been shown. This is an excellent look at how For All Mankind came together.

Buy,Download, Or Stream For All Mankind- Criterion Collection! Click Here

Also new is “On Camera,” a compilation of on-camera interviews Reinert conducted with 15 of the Apollo astronauts. In the film itself only the audio is used and it is nice to put a face to the voice.

“Painting from the Moon” is an updating of an extra on the original edition. After retiring from NASA, astronaut Alan Bean became a painter and this is a gallery of his work with commentary.

“NASA Audio Highlights” is a collection of 21 soundbites from the first ten years of the American space program. Some of the most famous words have spoken during this time, including Neil Armstrong’s immortal words.

Finally, there is “3, 2, 1 . . . Blast Off!” a collection of launch footage of various rockets taking off for outer space.

Without a doubt, this is one of the finest Blu Ray discs I own, not just for the fascinating and well done documentary, but for the total immersion in the Apollo Experience that new transfer (both video and audio) provides. It is STUNNING; there is no other way to describe 80 minutes of pure perfection.

The film that was brought back from the moon, original film elements, were used in the creation of this documentary to begin with when it was first compiled into an intriguing film some 20 years ago. With the advent of the new digital remaster, the film looks COMPLETELY different; so much so that my 12 year old daughter thought that the scenes shot on the Rover were special effects! Imagine her surprise when I told her that was actual moon mission footage, and it was as real and as untouched as if she herself were to take it using a camera. I don’t think she ever grasped that fully. In any case, the video is INCREDIBLE.

The audio of this wonderful film is provided by the voices of the astronauts and their machinery as well as an ambient soundtrack by Brian Eno. The music fully immerses you in its wondrous and enveloping score. The new transfer of the Eno audio soundtrack really cannot be adequately described…it is truly a masterpiece, because it becomes part of the film; it IS the film…it literally feels like part of the missions represented in this documentary. You are surrounded by these voices and machines and this incredible, incredible score by Eno…and it is truly an experience.

I’ve had the film on DVD for a number of years and it has always been one of my favorites (these guys were all my heroes growing up in the 60s and 70s and I’m a NASA buff). With the new Blu Ray presentation, Criterion has pulled out all the stops. As I watched, I was just shaking my head at just how phenomenal a disc this is; that it could be SO much better than my original DVD copy (which was no slouch either, and I have an upscaling DVD player too that made it look great…but NOTHING like THIS!)

With the 40th Anniversary of our first steps in the playground of the Universe upon us, this Blu Ray makes you realize just how much more there is so see out there and why we need to return to the stars…and how much we need to take care of this fragile world (and each other) as well. Highly recommended…and highly inspirational.

Finally a broad adult suspense film about several timely subjects . It ’s about the dying newspapers and political corruption.

Russell Crowe is suitable as an overweight, slightly shabby journalist, who is flawed personally, but an ample journalist.

Helen Mirren is obedient as his stressed boss.Ben Afflek is surprisingly valid as his veteran friend and US congressman. Rachel

McAdams is splendid as the current face of the news,a blogger for the newspaper. There is suspense, that grabs you and holds you til the demolish. I saw it with friends and discussed it through and after dinner. Always a price of a satisfactory movie. How in the world does Crowe manage to be so entertaining in messy clothes and overweight? I highly recommend this movie.

long as I can contemplate the light.”

Cleerance Clearwater Revival

No Procedure, ‘State of Play, the BBC miniseries was the best series I have seen since ‘Wired’. No Draw, was the American version going to be as agreeable. I was lawful, it is not as marvelous, but Almost!

Russell Crowe as Cal McCaffrey, the dilapidated time journalist who works for truth and justice, brings that justice to this film, like no one else could. He makes this film what it is. Rachel McAdams, as the Capitol Hill blogger, is splendid in her role, but it could have been anyone. Helen Mirren, as the editor of this sparkling paper, is ruthless and mean and ravishing, as is her wont. But, it was Russell Crowe who made this film enthralling. The dirty long hair flowing as he walked and ran down corridors. The paunch from eating all those expeditiously food meals and drinking the Irish wine, Scotch. Yep, this was the steady deal, the newsmen of yesteryear.

The aide to Congressman, Stephen Collins, played by Ben Affleck, dies suddenly, an accident or suicide or was it cancel? Cal and his newspaper blogger, Dela, open snooping and accept that one and one don’t compose two, it adds up to five. Four murders and an investigation into a security group that hopes to control the world. As time moves on and clues start to arrive together and stories unravel, we have a mercurial paced mystery, here. It is burly of suspense and intrigue and impartial when we believe we know who done it, the circle moves. That Russell Crowe, he could be one of the best actors around, you know that?

This is a fabulous addition to the profitable “Classic Albums” collection. This was truly a ground breaking album in unhurried 1975 and is broken down on this DVD in order of the unusual track listing. I am consistently overjoyed with the quality of sound and video of the “Classic Album” DVD’s (this being my 4th; the others: Pink Floyd, Deep Purple & Stevie Wonder) . This, like the others brings encourage key individuals that helped to get the album a success and a notch above others (i.e.: new engineers, music critics, fellow musicians and DJ’s) . They portray how no synthesizers were worn for their sound. Multi-tracking, piano flourishes, a harp, a ukulele, and multi-layered guitars all combine for a colossal and current sound.

A few highlights:

* A frustrated Freddie Mercury taking out his aggressions lyrically on their previous management in the opening song “Death on Two Legs”. They had been taken advantage of financially previous to this album.

* A chronicle of the very afraid bassist John Deacon who contributed very few songs in his career but they were important and outstanding ones to the group. Brian and Roger hiss of how he sheepishly introduces “You’re My Best Friend” to them and Freddie. Of course they loved it and Freddie making it a classic vocal with John on keyboards.

* “‘39″. A “enormous” Brian May song that he revisits in broad detail and sings in a modern chubby acoustic version and in some new archived footage. This has always been one of my common songs by anyone but never realized it was about spot go. Now I know why it has some similarities to the Irritable Blues “To Our Children’s Children’s Children” album also about plot depart a few years earlier in 1970.

* “Worship of My Life”. Also one of my personal favorites and an incredibly stunning song. This was a song Freddie had written about a “woman” he loved which it also explains in pictures. Not only is there some immense footage on this but also some gargantuan bonus footage of him (appears to be at Wembley where he sings acoustically to a few 100 thousand people. What an fantastic performance and performer! A MUST Watch! Also a touching original acoustic version by Brian on this track too.

* In depth details on “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Music video footage, sound board separations and astronomical archival live performances.

* Audio: 5 stars (unique footage & studio recordings) ; 3-4 Stars (ancient footage)

* Video: 5 Stars (recent footage) ; 3-4 Stars (outmoded footage)

* Bonus Features: 5 Stars

Song List (as presented here) :

It was really a pleasure to glance this DVD and realise the renewed personalities of drummer Roger Taylor and guitarist Brian May. If you remember after that Freddie passed away (RIP), they were really in a sunless, murky mood. I don’t remember their tranquility and peace of mind in an interview, since all happened, 6 years ago.

This DVD really is illustrative with an extensive analysis of the recording process song by song with Roy Thomas Baker and Brian May (I don’t know if it had would been better to add the comments of Roy Thomas Baker about the making of “Bohemian Rhapsody” that appear in “THE MAGIC YEARS” vol. I), special Roger’s drum demostration (almost a clinic!… If you aren’t a drummer, with these tips you can understand better the Roger Taylor style), with top-notch introspective interviews (and the reason of the John Deacon’s disappearing of the musical scene), with people that lived the bankrup of the band in ‘74, and finally, the making of an fantastic masterpiece: the A NIGHT AT THE OPERA album. It’s arresting explore the live footage and performances between one and another interview, and a suitable example of this is the live track “SWEET LADY” from the DVD LIVE AT THE HYDE PARK, ‘76… Grand Luck!
